Pinole, CA, October 16, 2024— The Pinole City Council approved Chapter 9.19 “Storage of Firearms” of the Municipal Code, introducing regulations on the safe storage of firearms within the city. The effective date of the ordinance is October 17, 2024.  This ordinance aims to reduce the risks associated with unsecured firearms, including accidental injuries, theft, and intentional harm.

Key provisions of the ordinance address residential storage, vehicle storage, and penalties.

In residences, firearms must be stored in a locked container or secured with a trigger lock when not in use. Ammunition is also required to be stored in a separate locked container.

Firearms left in vehicles must be disabled with a trigger lock, in a locked container, in the locked truck of the vehicle when in Pinole with limited exceptions.

Violations of the residential storage requirements may be punishable by a fine of up to one thousand dollars per violation. For vehicles, the first violation will be treated as an infraction, while subsequent violations will be punishable by a fine of up to one thousand dollars per violation.

The ordinance is designed to promote public safety by ensuring that firearms are inaccessible to unauthorized individuals, reducing the risk of tragic incidents such as accidental shootings, suicides, and crimes involving stolen firearms.

Vice Mayor Cameron Sasai played an instrumental role in introducing the new ordinance and working with City Attorney Eric Casher to develop the legislation, making it one of the strongest in the State of California. “The impact of this local law is lifesaving,” stated Sasai. “Secure gun storage is a simple yet effective measure that will keep firearms from getting into the wrong hands, protecting our community from the impacts of gun violence.”

“The adoption of this ordinance is an important step in safeguarding our community,” said Mayor Maureen Toms. “By securing firearms, we are preventing unnecessary harm and promoting responsible gun ownership in Pinole.”

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these new regulations and take the necessary steps to ensure their firearms are stored safely.
