October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week.

Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half? If a fire starts in your home, you may have as little as TWO MINUTES to escape, and smoke alarms are your first line of defense, giving you and your loved ones the precious time needed to escape. A working smoke alarm and a well-practiced fire escape plan can make all the difference.

California law (Building Code 907.2.11.2) requires smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home. For added safety, carbon monoxide alarms are also required outside bedrooms and on each level (Building Code 420.4.3).

Here’s what you need to know:
• Smoke alarms must be installed in every sleeping room, outside bedrooms, and on all stories of your home, including basements.
• Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed outside bedrooms and on each floor, including basements.

Stay Safe – Maintain Your Alarms:

✅ Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
🔄 Test alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
🔄 Replace batteries at least once a year (or as directed by your manufacturer).
🔄 Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or if they stop responding to tests. Don’t ignore the chirp— that sound means it’s time to replace the batteries!

Protect your loved ones – smoke alarms save lives! For more information on home fire safety, visit the Red Cross website or the National Fire Protection Association.
